The Infectious Etiology of Chronic Diseases PDF
By:Institute of Medicine,Board on Global Health,Forum on Microbial Threats
Published on 2004-07-16 by National Academies Press

In recent years, a number of chronic diseases have been linked, in some cases definitively, to an infectious etiology: peptic ulcer disease with Helicobacter pylori, cervical cancer with several human papillomaviruses, Lyme arthritis and neuroborreliosis with Borrelia burgdorferi, AIDS with the human immunodeficiency virus, liver cancer and cirrhosis with hepatitis B and C viruses, to name a few. The proven and suspected roles of microbes does not stop with physical ailments; infections are increasingly being examined as associated causes of or possible contributors to a variety of serious, chronic neuropsychiatric disorders and to developmental problems, especially in children. The Infectious Etiology of Chronic Diseases: Defining the Relationship, Enhancing the Research, and Mitigating the Effects, summarizes a two-day workshop held by the Institute of MedicineĆ¢€™s Forum on Microbial Threats to address this rapidly evolving field. Participants explored factors driving infectious etiologies of chronic diseases of prominence, identified difficulties in linking infectious agents with chronic outcomes, and discussed broad-based strategies and research programs to advance the field.

Teacher Assessment and the Quest for Teacher Quality PDF Free

Teacher Assessment and the Quest for Teacher Quality PDF
By:Mary Kennedy
Published on 2010-02-15 by John Wiley & Sons

|This handbook addresses and sorts out many of the complex issues related to teacher assessment and teacher quality, and the connections between the two. This is no small task, given the numerous ways and time points at which teacher quality is assessed, the multitude of stakeholders with a vested interest in assessment processes and assessment products, the competing policy and political agendas to which various assessments of teachers and teaching are attached, and ongoing controversies about what teacher quality means and why it is important. One of the strengths of this handbook is that it does not shy away from or attempt to reduce the messiness of these issues by offering a simplified notion of assessment and quality. —From the Foreword by Marilyn Cochran-Smith Praise for Teacher Assessment and the Quest for Teacher Quality |With its stellar lineup of authors, this book tackles with impressive insight the most fundamental and urgent problem facing educators today. Because teaching is the common pathway through which all educational improvements reach the students, nothing is more important than learning to assess its quality.| —James Hiebert, Robert J. Barkley Professor of Education, University of Delaware |Improvement of human capital is an urgent priority for education reform. Kennedy and her colleagues make an important contribution by presenting a variety of productive uses of assessment to improve teacher qualities and thereby teacher quality.| —Jody Spiro, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University |I am deeply encouraged by Teacher Assessment and the Quest for Teacher Quality as it gives a fresh voice to the critical conversation of the role of assessments in measuring teacher quality. This handbook, expertly edited by Mary Kennedy, offers a considered analysis with a keen focus on student learning.| —Joyce C. Loveless, NBCT, executive director, Program Access and Equity, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards |Every teacher, administrator, and school board member will benefit greatly from reading this thought-provoking book to truly understand and appreciate the intriguing, multi-dimensional relationship between teacher assessment and teacher quality.| —Jack Umstatter, best-selling author, Brain Games!

Is the Canadian Housing Market Overvalued? A+L4242 Post-Crisis Assessment PDF
By:Evridiki Tsounta
Published on 2009-10-01 by International Monetary Fund

Canadian house prices have increased significantly between 2003 and early 2008, with a marked downward trend since mid-2008, especially in the resource-rich western provinces. This paper estimates the evolution of equilibrium real home prices during this period in key provinces and finds that, following recent declines, home prices are now generally close to equilibrium throughout Canada. However, house prices in Alberta and British Columbia remain around 8 percent overvalued at the end of the sample (second quarter of 2009). Despite the limitations of econometric estimates of house-price dynamics, the measured small degree of overvaluation suggests that the Canadian housing market is essentially at equilibrium.

Multidimensional Executive Coaching PDF
By:Ruth L. Orenstein, PsyD
Published on 2007-06-25 by Springer Publishing Company

According to a recent study, there is a 40% failure rate among executives in the U.S. today. To combat the difficulties inherent in assuming high-level corporate roles companies are using new tools to help executives achieve maximum effectiveness, including the hiring of an executive coach. This unique book, written by a trained psychologist and executive coach with decades of experience as a business executive, offers a step-by-step guide to the practice of executive coaching. Using actual case studies, the author builds a multidimensional approach to coaching; clients are encouraged to look at multiple forces in their lives, including the Individual and the Organization, Unconscious Forces, Multi-Level Forces, and their Use of Self. Examining each force then guides the executive coach in joint goal setting, commitment to a coaching contract, meeting objectives, evaluating outcomes, and concluding the coaching process. Written specifically for graduate students--of applied psychology and related disciplines--who wish to practice executive coaching, this text will enlighten anyone in business who would like to use executive coaching to improve his or her organization.

Forensic Uses of Clinical Assessment Instruments PDF Free

Forensic Uses of Clinical Assessment Instruments PDF
By:Robert P. Archer,Elizabeth M. A. Wheeler
Published on 2013-04-26 by Routledge

This book provides, in a single volume, an extensive, research-based evaluation of the most popular clinical assessment tools as applied in forensic settings. These widely used instruments often require important modifications in their administration and interpretation when used for forensic purposes, and it is vital that the clinician is intimately familiar with their correct application, as well as their limitations. The test instruments included are analyzed by senior figures in the field of psychological assessment who are uniquely qualified to discuss them because they have either had a crucial role in the development of the tests, or they have dedicated their careers to advancing our understanding of these clinical assessment measures. Each chapter begins with a summary of the development of the assessment instrument in its more traditional applications in clinical settings, and then considers its utilization in forensic settings. The types of forensic issues which have been addressed with that instrument are reviewed, and an illustrative case example is given which reflects the types of uses and limitations of the assessment technique when applied in a forensic context. New in this edition are a chapter on the MMPI-2-RF and separate chapters for the adult and youth versions of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist. Psychologists using assessment instruments in applied forensic settings will find this to be a valuable and practical source of information, as will attorneys wishing to gain an understanding of the application of these psychological assessment approaches in the courtroom.

Although there are many factors affecting the implementation of 'E-CRM', that is companies' CRM initiatives on the Internet channel; this study focuses on examining consumer perceptions towards the constituents of building online consumer relationships. Assessment in Counseling PDF
By:Albert Bullard Hood,Richard W. Johnson
Published on 1997 by

Assessment has always played an important role in counseling. This book provides information about the various psychological assessment procedures that are relevant for practicing counselors. The text deals with the use of tests that are most often employed by counselors and it includes case studies. Its purpose is to help counselors become better consumers and interpreters of psychological and educational tests and assessment procedures. It emphasizes the selection, interpretation, and communication of psychological test results and also details the importance of integrating test results with other information about the client. It is not designed to be a text book or desk manual on the various tests themselves. The first four chapters introduce the reader to basic concepts in psychological assessment and to the statistical knowledge needed to select and interpret tests. Chapters 5 through 15 constitute the bulk of the book. Here, over 100 tests and other assessment measures are examined. The assessments are divided into three categories: cognitive, career and life planning, and personality. In chapters 16 through 18, professional practices and considerations are explored, including analyses of cultural bias, communication of test results, and ethical and social issues in testing. (Contains roughly 500 references and a comprehensive index.) (RJM)
